About you, why you got into what you are making/doing/selling

Adelaide Fringe is the biggest arts festival in the Southern Hemisphere! For 31 magical summer days and nights, Fringe transforms Adelaide and greater South Australia. Our festival stretches across the state, with eclectic and vibrant events that include cabaret, theatre, comedy, circus, music, visual arts, workshops and so much more. Adelaide Fringe was born in 1960 and has grown year on year.

Our audiences range from 1 to 100+ years old, and come from all walks of life. This variety also pertains to our diverse array of artists and venues, which are at the heart of everything we do. We truly are ‘The People’s Festival’.

We are a not-for-profit, open access festival. This means that anyone can register an event in Adelaide Fringe! Whether you’re putting on a modestly-budgeted, dugong-themed cabaret gig in your Mum’s garage or you’re selling out spiegeltents with your high flying circus act—Fringe welcomes you with open arms!

Who or what inspired you to start up your business?

In 1960, the local arts community felt there was limited opportunity for local talent within the Adelaide International Festival of Arts program, so a small group of independent artists presented shows on the ‘fringe’ of the Adelaide Festival. These brave artists forged an innovative, open-access festival with no curators. They sought to defy the exclusionary practises of cultural gatekeepers, and threw it open, allowing everyone to be part of the arts in South Australia. To this day, the spirit of inclusivity and a non-curated structure are at the crux of our festival.

When did you start on this journey?

We began this journey in 1960 to provide a platform for artists to try out new work, experiment, and engage with new ideas.

What’s you most favourite item that you make/sell?

As an arts festival we don’t necessarily make or sell anything but what we do produce is an experience. We create a platform for freedom, freedom for our artists and for our audience to be their true selves, explore, create, imagine, enjoy and transform.

Our Story

The Adelaide Fringe is a collaboration and co-creation between artists, venues, audiences and community.

By championing a combination of art forms and delivery platforms, Adelaide Fringe connects artists with as wide an audience as possible. Adelaide Fringe is a springboard for artists to the world.

Year on year, more new audiences attend Adelaide Fringe. We celebrate the arts and its value in our lives.

Philanthropic giving at Adelaide Fringe is growing and the funds support the cultural agenda of Adelaide Fringe.

Our people are inclusive, agile, flexible, creative and collaborative.  Adelaide Fringe is recognised as one of the most important festivals in the world: a unique experience that touches hearts and minds around the globe.

Our Purpose

To inspire creativity, engagement and learning through the joy of bringing artists, audiences, venues and communities together.

Who is your favourite all time drag artist and why?
